Always funny to read about a decade of electronic music which I have experienced slightly different. Especially house music. There were 2 main lines. One from NY with vocal house and one from Chicago with more instrumental, rhythmic music. From the chicago line minimal house/techno and detroit techno was influenced.

I think the point of view differs pretty much in which country you live or have lived ....

Funny 2: when breaks / big beat came up, noone really was able to dance to it (I can only say that for germany) because it was different to 4 on the floor

Ahhhh, the old times  Never felt so much energy as with classic german trance. It's a shame that noone spins the old tunes anymore. Parties that last over 8 hours with a unique music style.

Nope. I disagree. Tastes are very different of course. But to get you high is the job of a good dj. Most common minimal tracks I know are very easy to mix but to rule a great party through different styles tells a good from a bad dj  :-P And he has to put you on his journey ...

Minimal even gets boring to me because everyone thinks it's art and behaves like this would be the 'best style' of all.

If you want to get high just smoke a joint ;-)  You don't need art to get high :-P
(user gone) on April 5th, 2006 / post 3462
so is breakbeat an offshoot of funky breaks or the same thing, i get confused :-/ , also to the last poster im pretty sure that smoking a joint isnt going to give you the same high as fast paced up beat music infact its probably as far away from it as possible.

Everything is possible :-P Just have to know what you smoke

Maybe. But in this case you can't tell wheather the music or the joint or both is/are awesome    And that's the point: some ravers can only make party with drugs because without the music is crappy ...

What do you mean with 'soul' ? In electronic music there exists music which is supposed to be 'soulless'. I agree that style doesn't matters if a song is a good peace of work. But music tastes are very different ... (who really can tell what is good and bad ?)

If you think of a dj, style matters because you can't pitch some styles too much up and down. For example it's not possible to mix a minimal house track around 125 BPM with a gabba track (180 BPM) together. Even iif your gear has unlimited pitch range, a track sounds only proper in a small range of pitch (+/- 10% I suggest). So style and good track selection matters.

Psychedelic Trance:

Psychedelic trance, often referred to as psytrance, is a form of electronic dance music that developed from Goa trance in the early 1990s. Many people mistakenly believe psytrance is a form of trance music when in fact, what is today called trance music was developed following the success of Goa trance when it first began hitting the mainstream. In some psychedelic trance circles and online communities, 'Psychedelic' is the preferred name for the genre as it provides an umbrella term for the many divergent styles including psytrance, goa, full on, dark psy, melodic psy, progressive, minimal, nizhot, and suomi. Calling it Psychedelic also distinguishes the style from the much clubbier type of music called trance music and reinforces the roots of goa trance in the psychedelic community. Psychedelic trance generally has a fast tempo, in the range 135 to 150 beats per minute (bpm) but has developed into numerous different styles within the genre all with their own range of tempos. The emphasis in psychedelic trance is placed strongly on purely synthesized timbres in terms of programming and lead melodies. The original Goa trance was often made with popular Modular synthesizers and hardware samplers, but the preference in Psychedelic trance has moved to sample manipulation and storage in VST and AU software sampler applications. The use of analog synthesizers for sound synthesis has given way to digital "virtual analog" instruments like the Nord Lead, Access Virus, Korg MS-2000, Roland JP-8000 and computer VST and AU plugins like Native Instruments Reaktor. These are usually controlled by MIDI sequencers within Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) applications.

Psytrance is most popular in the UK, Israel, Portugal, Mexico, Germany, Japan, Australia, Brazil, South Africa, Serbia, Macedonia, Netherlands, the Nordic countries and India. The genre is not as well known outside its scene as uplifting or progressive trance is.

Psychedelic trance developed out of the early 1990s Goa Trance scene through the influence of artists such as Timeshard and Eat Static, both on the Planet Dog record label.

The first pure Psychedelic trance label was Dragonfly Records, formed by the artist and trance producer Martin "Youth" Glover (a former bassist for the band Killing Joke) in Brixton, London

Some people at these festivals frequently consume psychedelic drugs like LSD and psychedelic mushrooms. The smoking of Cannabis is widespread within the global psy-trance scene. Drugs such as Ecstasy, cocaine and amphetamine are also used to some extent...

heheh  :-D
