I use month and year of download date, and it suits me
I usually download multiple torrents at once and collect them in a separated folder ("TM"). When this folder hits about 50 files, I run my renamer tool to automatically rename files for better readability (software written by myself for TM specific naming conventions). Now I ID3-tag them (adding year, genre, if it's a show, name of the show goes in album) and put them in: \Music\\
I use a separate HDD for all the music (+ backup HDD). I'd be way too lazy to burn them on discs.
To play the music, I use AIMP. It can automatically group music according to their ID3-tags. Best Winmap alternative I found, highly recommended!

I organize my files by year and then sub folders with dj names or mixes. Easier for me :)
One folder named TRANCE. Every DJ has his own folder.
I have folders for years. I then rely on the "find in folder" function on my player (Media Monkey).
Every download goes into tm torrents folder. Then automatically renamed via batch renamer and copied to incoming folder on pc (.bat script). Then ID3 tag remove software.
Every live set has to be perfectly renamed to: "Artist - Radio Show Name (Radio) [XX-XX-XX].mp3"
Then all copied to one big folder called "livesets" on 1TB ext usb network drive.

Mine depends on what set it is. I used to do one for Frisky and Proton radio but now I have a tribalmixes folder where I put in what I got that month. I have separate folders for festivals and such. WMC gets it's own as does things like John Digweed at the end of the year. I do the month folders so I can just move them to my phone and listen to them on a playlist with that month title.
I have everything stored on a 2TB drive and backed up on the same size drive. My electronic folder is at 300GB currently. Probably a few doubles in there but not too many.

Wow, there are some very organised people out there.
Over here, just one big TRIBALMIXES folder, and recently i added a TM RADIO folder which allows ease of access through utorrent, ftp and access whilst out and about. Although i wanted to, I found it difficult to house music in separate folders as when something went awall with windows or utorrent it was way too time consuming to force recheck, each individual files. Much easier to have in one common folder.
I lost some dearly treasured files recently, i learnt my lesson with the failing of a hard drive. I was lucky as all was recoverable through generous users of tribalmixes coming to my rescue. I do backup my music files, usually monthly or bi monthly, these particular folders had been missed. Can i stress to everyone if you have music you wish to have into the future, Back it up!

iTunes managing around 120 gigs on an external HDD. i only keep excellent sets or albums, otherwise i'd have stacks of drives with only music. weekly radio shows get deleted once i listen. active music collection is only 10 gigs or so on my phone.
i backed a lot of older sets on google music when it first came out, but i rarely listen to that. spotify for individual songs, mostly.

i organize my downloads by download date, my rips by rip date, when my 200GB hdd space overfills once every couple of months, i burn 20-30 dvds at one shot, also marking them with months' names so that when i need something, i'll look up here when it was posted and easy find it by file-dates if on hdd or by correctly marked dvds.. i have about 200 dvds already... basically i only use them to reseed something if noone else does... but lately noone wants any reseeds pretty much...

Dvd's...brilliant. i have one new hdd ready to go in storage, but, i am running out of living space...life takes a lot of room for me!
I've been collecting music since 2005. I have them organized by year downloaded. And burned dvds as backup
If you have a lot of music in the end always you have little or big mess. :) More interesting part is creating backups, because even in messy structure you can listen what you want, but if you lost it...

On that note I wish i had a 4tb go drive to put all my music on. I left two big drives at home in the states and im in SK now. And i really wanna hear Dario Nunez. It's the first torrent i ever dl from here.
I have 5 3tb disks and instead of using a RAID array I just use Diskeeper. It works pretty well for me and its less of a hassle to replace disks in the group.

sets are (mostly) sorted by year, but tracks-organization is a complete mess! half of the tracks I didn't even listen to so far.
I started putting everything into the iTunes library and got really shocked, even though I knew i had lots of music
now when I have some spare time, I just hit the shuffle-button and sort the ones out, that I don't like. but organizing? no way! It would take one lifetime, at least!
