Shaving, page 1

Most of us shave I believe. I was wondering are you guys into wet shaving, or do you just use the standard stuff, like gillete fusion or mach3 and cream from cans?

I used to shave using an electric razor, I then went to cartridges and then 2 months ago I changed to a Double Edged razor (DE).

I started out with a Merkur 34c razor, and a razor blade sample pack. at that point I still kept using the nivea shaving cream, that came out of a can. The reason why, is because I did not want to into the whole wet shaving thing until I played around with those DE blades. As it turns out, I really like it, my face does not as much as before, and its less irritating.

2 months later I bought a brush and proper shaving cream and pre-shave oil and stuff. I have to say, yes my technique has not been perfected, there are still parts that look shaved better than others, but overall this is definitely something I am happy that I got into.

Anyways I was wondering what are your routines like, and whether you ever tried wet shaving? and all that.

Mo, being an old man and a typical yorkshire man I have only ever wet shaved, tried electric shaver when I was younger and it never did anything for me, I don't use gel, I use a brush and a wilkinson sword soap...always feels great to shave this way for me anyway!! This is what I use..

ooo, so where you live, its normal to wet shave then? Thats pretty cool. Do you have any tips to throw my way.

Like how do you lather and do you do anything pre-shave?

Since you have been doing it for a long it time, its like second nature to you then, ur lucky  :-D

I am getting there

After I saw your pics here is what i have. I know there are different blades, I am still testing with what I like.

I don't know about normal, its just normal for me. I use the same razors as you...normally wet face with warm water...let it soak then lather with the brush thats it...and shave! I sometimes use after shave balm, but thats it...for good skin/vitamin c/ digestion I drink freshly squeezed limes in luke warm water...or with lemons whichever you prefer

I will definitly add more oranges in my diet then and drink lemon juice, it will prolly take some time for me to see a difference in my skin but will comment on that when it happens.

I usually shower first and then shave, ensuring that I soften my whiskers as much as possible.

BUT today morning was the first time I digress from my routine. I washed my face with hot water for a few seconds, and then I got a towel, wet it with hot water, and applied to my face and I started massaging. I did that a couple of times and then applied the pre-shave oil with my face still wet.

Then I shaved, today was the first time to have a shave that did not annoy me in the morning, and I only nicked myself in one place  :-O . So today as a huge improvement for me, hence me starting the  whole topic cuz its fun  :mml:

Anyways,  I will still keep playing around till I find my sweet spot

i started with a gilette blade back in russia, over the years i've had all kinds of shaving, now my wife likes me to have something on my face, so i only shave once a month. i use a hair trimmer to shave my face on regular basis, if i need to shave clean - i use phillips electric shaver, it actually shaves AS GOOD AS ANY (NUMBER OF) BLADE(S).. but in my 33 years old, my facial hair still grows kinda in patches on my face, so i try not to let it all grow longer than 1-1.5cm...

On the shaving forums I started checking out, they had an acronym for the wives/GF, "SWMBO" it stands for "she who must be obeyed"

Sounds like everyone everywhere is affected by them

Mo, its better only to have empathy for women, not to really listen to them in its entirity... well I have my own voice in my head and that supercedes anything any women says or does...

shave often....use whatever gel I can for sensitive skin. Use a Gilette Fusion and the wife finds coupons for the ultra expensive blades. I shave when needed....when I can be arsed or when the wife says no sex until you shave.

Wet shave is the only way to go..... Tried an electric shaver, just can't get close enough and often get a horrible shaving rash.

Schick 4 blade razor, i have found to be the best, used gillette for a few years but the blades loose their sharpness quickly, the schhick seems to hold it edge somewhat longer.

I have always shaved with Gel, not foam, i am interested to give soap and a brush a go. I think i will through it on the christmas list, beats getting g-strings and socks  ;-)

If you ever need a place to and start, there is this forum, badgerandblade I joined it, it has a wealth of information and an active user base.

I would suggest a badger hair brush, you could find great brushes in the 75$ range. That might be a little steep, but the brush usually lives for a few years, so worth the investment.

Once you get into the different scents of the shaving cream/soaps. Its going to be addictive.

I got my first Taylor of old Bond street  shave creams today, it consisted 14 scents 1/4 oz each. I found it on this website. I personally liked the almond, coconut and sandalwood. All the rest just were meh.

If you want more info, just check that forum, or ask me with the little knowledge I gathered the past few days, I doubt I will be of any help. but do keep us updated.
