Oh I will be back.  Checked out your suggestion, Munkyn, but isnt that still subject to the failure of that device?  I am thinking on getting two drives, one main, and one for weekly or monthly backups.

First I am going to see if anyone can repair / retrieve from my sick drive.  Sorry for dropping all my seeds.  I will build up again.

there is software RAID in the device... currently I have 3 disks totalling 9Tb...using RAIDX (netgears dynamic software) or RAID5...so that if one disk fails the spare disk picks up where the failed one left off...it does this seemlessly if a failure occurs...so you can order a replacement ASAP... currently I have one spare slot in the 4 disk bay, so anytime I want to expand to a tital of 9Tb I can... your idea to mirror is god idea...just time consuming to copy weekly or monthly unless you script it or with software dependent on cost and time it can be a good and bad idea, because if you run out of space you need to buy another two disks. For me the storage array is good solution coupled with with my UPS (and in built surge protection ) I at least protect my data and device from any future spikes and gives me time should my drive go pear shaped...!!

enjoy  the recovery process...its tedious and frustrating to say the least hence my current setup!!

i have 6 drives now.. well, i have 7 drives, yeah, and 1 cdr... all sata connections... my motherboard provides 6 SATA connections and 2 eSATAs... so now i have my SSD and 5 HDDs connected on 6 SATA, then i have 1 eSATA drive, external, and then i have my CDR connected with a special cable that changes from eSATA to SATA... hehe... all 8 taken. my 1000 Watt power supply can take on even more, there are 2 more new connections still available, and several old ones.. yeah... i don't backup, i just hope for the best. =)

ps. obviously windows is on SSD, plus major software, it's only 128GB, but another one 128GB is on the way, thanks black friday sale... and then i have 3 x 2TB and 3 x 1TB...
