  • Inside Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, the world most advanced operating system

    Despite the redesigned GUI, marking a real change from previous version of OS X, we should now look one step further, and focus on what is inside Leopard.

    First, it is a true 64-bit system while remaining fully compatible with 32-bit applications. Let's face it, Apple engineers have successfully designed a 64-bit system with a native back-compatibility to 32-bit, something not achieved by neither Microsoft nor Linux. Both Windows and Linux distributions are available in 32-bits or 64-bits. Once more, Apple thought about the end user who does not want to care or think about if its application is a 32-bit -encoded one or not. Even though the immediate impact on performance level might be limited to Pro users, editing and rendering large photos and video files will be faster.

    Core Animation brings Core technology for audio, video and image, allowing developers to easily add eye-catching effect on their 2D application. One will have to wait for the first applications taking advantage of such technology to evaluate if it is really useful or only a good-looking gadget.

    Apple wants to bring multi core support. With Intel transition, almost all hardware models are featuring Dual or Quad Core CPUs. Even so Mac OS X is multicore aware since 10.0 (even from Mac OS 9 with the proper system extension), Apple wants to push it further and help developers. One way is to offer technology allowing developers not to think about multicore management or defining multithreaded tasks, as Cocoa will take care of it. Mail.app, Address Book and Font Utility are already coded this way. One will have to test Leopard and those applications to check if it brings a strong benefit, but for sure some iApps or Apple-branded applications will benefit of such system-managed multithreading.

    On the Unix side, Leopard is "UNIX 03"-certified. In other words, it follows the last standard guide lines, including specifications for compiling programs developed for other UNIX 03-labelled Unix (Solaris 10, AIX 5.3, HP-UX...). Linux is not UNIX-certified but it tries to reach all standard defined in UNIX 03.

    Among other interesting features found inside Leopard Unix:

    - automatic TCP optimization: The system automatically adapts the size of the buffer depending on the type of connection. If we will probably not see it with our current internet connection, it will be a noticeable advantage for high-bandwidth connection users.

    - Multicore optimization of several system components, including the network layer.

    - DTrace, originating from Solaris, allows a fine tuning of resources when debugging software.

    Apple also worked on security with Leopard, even though we are much less exposed then Windows users:
    - one can launch an application in "sandbox" mode, defining exactly the files and resources to be used/modified.
    - as previously mentioned today, file sharing is made easier but also safer as one can quickly define the rights associated to a file or a folder. You can even define it for contacts in your Address Book.
    - Leopard is able to identify and report to the user/administrator if an application has been modified from its installation.

    With so many new features, the Developer Tools have evolved and XCode is now available in version 3.0 while Objective-C is now in version 2.0. The integration of DTrace also leads to the introduction of a new graphic tool named, Xray, and designed to be deeply integrated in future applications.

  • inside the WWDC07

    The main topic was of course Leopard and Steve presented 10 features:

    - a new finder
    - new presentation
    - new menu bar
    - new dock
    - stacks, even in docks to clean up desktop
    - homogenous display
    - prominent active windows
    - new side bar
    - search other Macs and server
    - back to my mac

    - Cover Flow
    To quickly scroll through documents or cycle through the pages of a PDF

    - Quick Look
    something similar to a feature already available in LotusNotes, but pushed to its limits. It let you instantly preview files without opening applications. It works with most popular filetypes (text, image, video, word, excel etc.). Plug-in modules are available for developers.

    - 64-bit
    Leopard is 64-bit from top to bottom, let's hope iApps will become also 64-bit too

    - Core animation
    Integrate core animation covering audio, image and video;

    - Boot Camp
    Boot Camp is built-in, but not "integrated", you still need a reboot, so virtualization solutions are still valuable. Apple is very happy with Parallels and VMWare and helping as much as they can. The new built-in Boot Camp will be updated via OSX update, so no needs to burn drivers on CD, or update independently.

    - Spaces
    Steve demoed multiple desktops using spaces, including core animation, and illustrating how to rearrange applications between spaces with drag and drop, easily defining a game space and a working bench space

    - Dashboard
    As demoed last year, one can create widget directly from safari, such widgets are dynamic too

    - iChat
    ichat is compatible with all new features, QuickLook let's you share image, video and documents with connected buddies. PhotoBooth add some special effects.

    - Time Machine
    Makes it simple to to backup your data.

    Then Steve could not resist to talk about iPhone, and especially how third parties will be able to simply develop applications without compromising security; The SDK is simple: tit is based on Safari engine built on Web 2.0 and Ajax.

    Then Steve announced Safari 3.0 on Mac.... and PC!! One can immediately speculate that it will allow PC users to use their iPhone and applications developed for it directly on the Safari on their PC.

    News/Rumors not mentioned during the keynote:
    - default ZDF file system: not a single word about it
    - no hardware announcement

    probably something like this one

    iMac 17'' Core 2 Duo 2.00 GHz
       *  1GB memory
       * 160GB hard drive1
       * 8x DL SuperDrive
       * ATI Radeon X1600 graphics
    Commissarlightning Leopard on June 15th, 2007 / post 19620
    that's very cool one, I have a 20" one at home, the difference from the one you want is just 2.16GHz proc.; the bigger display and 250GB HD, and it's just spectacular, however, I don't get the chance to enjoy it much because I'm not home most of the time, just when going to sleep 8=)

    ye actually i just need more space like urs tho i dont have so much money  :lol: anyway.the reason i wanna buy mac is only that when im workin on my pc with more then 1 program.lets say i open reason and cubase with some plug in and rewire both on ableton my computer dies.when i put more effects on each of the channel of ableton...the same.and the other thing is that i wanna use Logic.which can be used only with mac os.  :-)
    Commissarlightning Leopard on June 15th, 2007 / post 19628
    I know exactly what you are talking about, and here is my recommendations to you

    1) get the iMac 17" 2.0GHz due to lower cost than 20"

    2) get an extra 1GB RAM so it will be 2Gigs

    3) you can still connect any USB or FireWire hard drives you got to your Mac, and even when you run out of space, you can always get the external storage you need

    4) Get Logic Pro 7 .. and if you don't wanna buy it and don't know how to get it, just tell me .. and also you still can get Ableton, CuBase and Reason .. all of these softwares are available for Mac with more sophisticated interfaces and much more better performance than windows

    5) further more, if you can afford the price, Avid or Digidesign ProTools system is a very advanced audio production suite .. but don't forget, that Logic Pro is also enough and will really satisfy all your needs, Sasha, Digweed, Ali & Sharam and many many more depend mainly in their production workflow on Logic

    and let me tell you if you never used a Mac before or rarely, believe me, you gotta love it .. it's very very simple, instead of spending most of your time solving problems on windows, on a Mac, you will spend all of your time getting your work done, who tries a Mac, never looks back :)
    enenlightning *deepsoulfunk* on June 15th, 2007 / post 19630
    yes i know everyone uses Logic.and yes i will install ableton for sure (loving it).Tho reason cant be used thru mac so far i know
    anyway
    when i get this mac ill tell u.ppl say the big problem is transfering files from pc to mac and reverse..
    Commissarlightning Leopard on June 15th, 2007 / post 19635
    no man .. Reason is available for Mac and not only that, it supports rewiring Ableton Live, Apple GarageBand and Apple Logic .. check this: https://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/audio/reason.html

    and ofcourse I will help you in anything you want, about transferring your files from your older PC, here are some facts:

    1) Macs are compatible, Apple uses industry standards like USB & FireWire to assure their users will have no pain connecting any external prephirals and devices to their Macs

    2) You can transfer your files from PC to Mac or vice versa using several methods like:
  • Connecting an Ethernet cable directly between your Mac and PC, opening system preferences in your Mac, go to sharing and turn on Windows File Sharing, then share your partitions in windows and you will be able to access either your Mac or your PC from each other
  • Just make sure both of them are on the same wireless or cable network, modify your sharing setting like stated above and they will be able to share files using the SMB/CIFS protocol
  • Using 4pin/6pin or 6pin/6pin FireWire cable connecting both directly, it depends on your PC FireWire port wether it is 4pin (small) or 6pin (bigger), all Macs has the 6pin port
  • Using any external storage device like an external hard drive, USB Flash or even an iPod to transfer files from PC or Mac to it then send them to the other .. just make sure that the hard drive or the USB flash will be formatted as FAT32 file system and the iPod to be windows formatted not Macintosh

    that will help me alot man.and i didnt know about reason.i thought reason is kind of logic but for windows.and thats so cool because i use reason a lot.cant wait to buy that thing.about rewiring- it is not a big problem for me.windows does it..not very well but it still does it  :lol:

    I meant you will be able to rewire Apple Logic with Reason for example :) .. and when you work on your new Mac, you will realise that you will be much more productive, the Core Audio technology in Mac OS X enables many Audio features and enhancments which are not available in windows .. it's just the professional way in creating, editing and mixing music and other media ofcourse.

    about differences between different Audio Softwares:
  • Logic & Reason: Logic Pro has lots more plugins and has audio and midi in/out capabilities .. Reason is very easy to get started with and will seem familiar if you are used to hardware mixing and also it's a synth/sampler workstation but it's much harder to manipulate than Logic, maybe because it's not considered as an Audio Editor.
  • Logic & Ableton Live: Live is very good in time stretching and VST are already supported while in Logic you have to purchase the fxpansion VST wrapper .. however, Logic is better in MIDI editing, built in instruments, great flexibility and a huge library that you can't give up, also a must mention unique features in it like Sculpture and Space Designer .. Live is a great piece of software to develop your sounds and melodic ideas then structure the outline of your track, then ReWiring it into Logic for mixing, very precise automation and the very detailed MIDI editing, briefly Logic + Live = Endless possibilities.

    Not to mention about Logic Pro:
  • High Audio Quality
  • Stable like a solid rock
  • The unique integration as the computer you are working on, the operating system and Logic Pro, all created by the same company ensuring that everything will just work fine
