INTERNATIONAL DJ-ING COMPETITION 2008 - OFFICIAL DISCUSSIONS, page 2

How is it gonna be rated by the judges? They can only rate the technical skill and the track composition. Isn't that kinda too subjective?
As for the teams: I think it's okay to have a undefined size for teams as long as all of their mixes are rated averagly. Though each team should at least have 3 DJs representing the country. So basically one team for each country with xy DJs in. Rating for each country will be the average of all DJs from the country.
Setting up the teams shouln't be a problem, I guess. The teams should decide theirselves which national DJs are allowed to enter (expecting that they decide on technical/promo reasons).

- Yeh, would love to be a "Grand Jury" Member, but how will will the voting work? I think a good idea for this might be that each team has five members, and each mix gets a score out of 20. To get a country score, just add them all up to get a score out of 100 or another option is a poll, but that doesn't give too much chance for the jury member to actually differentiate between different mixes
- I think we should have a limit on the length of the mixes for a number of reasons. Firstly, to actually appreciate a set, i have to listen to it more than once to get an idea about a certain mix. If each team member has 1hr30min mixes, that means that is 7.5 hours per team (5 member team). Then you have 15 teams, thats like 115hours!!!! i have enough problems listening to 5-10 hours a week let alone 115 hours!!!! Secondly, some people have a download limit per month, so downloading roughly 10 gig in one go, will significantly dent a significant hole in there usage for that month
- I like the idea of having different genres, however i think maybe there should be 5-6 standard genres that each team should use which means that it is easier for grand jury members to compare and score mixes. I mean how can you compare two countries that have completely different genres? i.e Team A -Psy Trance, Hard House, Electro vs Team B - Tribal, Prog, Minimal. The less standardisation the more voter bias will influence the vote.... So it might work something like this: Trance (including Progressive Trance, Hard House, Uplifting, Psy), Minimal/Techno, Prog (Progressive House etc etc
Anyway... just a few ideas, the idea sounds great and i can't wait to be apart of it

but what about making the competition in certain genre like there will be a qualifications from 50 dj from different countries in the Tribal music as an example then they will be only 3 winners in the end in every genre, and this winner represent his country in this genre. I think that will make it easier.
hope this will be like the last one it was awesome having a lot of great music

hey all thanks for good ideas and all.. spr is like "hey, forget about!! let's go battle already!!" =) well, answering this, i can tell, 1 hr has been a format known and taken and accepted everywhere, all djs can brilliantly fit into 1 hr, and yes, having 7.5 hours per team will be 50% more work for the jury.. so, this one is negative, we can go with 55 mins or 1hr 5 mins, but not more than that. as a matter of fact, a thing happened in first idc, was greek team's 1h15m and 45m sets, apparently 45m set was meant to be 1hr long, but uploaded incomplete and blah-blah, but make it short we can keep that rule and say, that if you want to put 1.5hr long mix, one of your teammates will only do 30min long mix.
making 1 unlimited team per country, well, it's a nice one, but then again who wins a marathon? a player! a championship? a team.. and then their gold is summarized and silver and bronze and they see who did better, which country? but still in each contest there's a winning team "from country", where could be several participating (bobsleigh - of up to 5 people) teams entering from same country, it doesn't matter, still they compete each other and break their own friends' records.. and yeah, we catch two rabbits, or hit to targets at the same time - both personal certain team's pride is honored, along with its represented country, well honored as well! unlimited and averaged numbers will look kinda ugly, and gray.. and djs will be left in the shade.. and having team ICountry 2 win first spot and ICountry 1 win second, will only show that ICountry is very well good in what they showed... which makes it obvious to mention voting and jury...
i'm planning on catching up with lots of stuff soon, and will as well create a friendly judge workshop, where judges will be able to select sets, view their info/tracklists, maybe give sets a listen, although i can't guarantee last one.. but then each set will be either a) rated by several parameters, like we did last, although it did take lots of time, or b) rated on a flat scale from 1 to 20, hoping that single numbers won't be there, which will go faster and will save time, keeping from thinking on what sets are like there in all their aspects... well, and as said before, a few words about preferably each set, but maybe just in general about the whole team experience, will be highly appreciated. and yes, having it the a)-way will eliminate the styling diversity issue, because sets will then be judged more by the djs' work put in them, not by 1 to 20 personal experience scale schematic..
and prizes.. yes, prizes... well, i can't think so far.. maybe t-shirts, those that i'm about to print sooner or later, otherwise i don't have anything valuable... maybe get something from beatport somehow? some free tracks? anyways, this is dark now....

Sounding beter with every post, whats the time frame over which we can listen/rate/judge all the sets.....
An award for the best set from each genre sounds like a good idea too, however the setting up of the voting process sounds difficult enough so adding another complexity might not be a good idea
