well thats great that you want to start running
when i started running for good health, this is what i did i took someone to encourage me to continue
for the first set of laps we ran 4 laps had a 1 lap break then 3,2, then 1 around every week i increased my running and know i can Jog 12 laps non stop then i am done
*each lap is 400 meters (i have no idea in miles)
thats how i did it
and by time if i dont run usually i would be very angry and i cant focus
but since you are in the military you probably used to run for miles and miles
for me i dont have a diet for running
but i go by no fatty food, sweets, pop alcohol smoking etc, i dont do
i eat salad in the beginning so i dont eat a lot of carbs
then i grab small portions of the other food
when i get up, from the table i usually dont go full so i function
hope you read and enjoyed what i said

Are you trying to lose weight buddy?
If so, you should eat 6 very small meals each day like this:
Breakfast (8.00am) - Bowl of Cereals with Milk, 1 no fat Yogurt, 1 Fruit, 70g of Protein Whey
Pre-Lunch (11.00am) - 70g of Turkey or Chicken breast, 50g almonds, Glass of Orange Juice
Lunch (2.00pm) - 70g Pasta or Pizza or Rice or any kind of carbs basically, shitload of Vegetables, a small (60g / 70g) Tuna steak and 1 fruit
Snack (5.00pm) - 70g of Protein whey or Protein Bar and 1 Banana
Dinner (8.00pm) - 100g of White meat or Any kind of Fish, 40g rice, shitload of vegetables again and 1 fruit
The solution is in giving your body a lot of Proteins which will help you with fat burning and to not "fill" you up with just 2 or 3 meals where you eat like a beast cos you are hungry of course.
You should drink about 5 to 6 liters of water a day. This is the hard part for most people, but fundamental. You need to make your body get rid of all the sh!t inside.
Moreover, for your body it isn't really good to just run. You should combine it with some weighting room sessions as well as some Plyometrics, where you jump around like a mad man.
You can run everyday, but run a little but less after you do weighting room sessions.
If you are really serious about this you should check P90X program.
It doesn't matter in what kind of condition you are, in 90 days with 1 hour a day for each day you'll be in the best shape of your life. Guaranteed.
I have been boxing for the last 4 years, I know about training hard
Hope this helped!

Not necessarily wanna "lose" weight. I just kinda got into running recently, and wanna try to eat right. P90X, i dont know about all that. Im in the Air Force and i know ppl that love it talk about it all the time. but i think i'll just run. When i start running seriously, within a yr of running i wanna try to do a marathon.

Yes, ok, I know what you mean.
However to accomplish better results, you would need to combine some other work with running: maybe swimming, jumping exercises and weighting room sessions. That is because you don't want your body and you blood pressure to get accustomed to running or you will never be able to do more each time.
That diet I told you will help you drop a few extra pounds (if you have any that is) but it is very healthy as well. Eat lots of proteins and don't touch the carbs at night unless you had a massive workout in the afternoon and need to recovery in which case you can have some.
And when you will run the marathon you will kick ass!!!
