Is the ape smiling?. How do we perceive that a person is smiling. Sound of laughter,Lips,eyes,eye brows,teeth etc.Facial expressions and the sound we interpret as laughter. Laughter can be infectious. It can spread throughout a population. In fact the sound/sight of laughter itself can be enough to cause another human to laugh. Thus a chain reaction of Joy.

People look funny when they laugh.

laugher itself does not reduce the chance of a earth quake (one example of a planetary process that causers disasters on the human scale).But laughter does greatly reduce the risks associated with the violence caused by some confused people.
