In the early 90s, two lads in Newcastle, Andy Horsfield and James Todd, struck up a friendship and found a way of making a little cash from their passion for clubbing by selling club merchandise including bootleg tape recordings of live DJ sets to local record shops.

By the mid 90s, dance music mix CDs were selling increasingly well. A friend suggetsed the boys create their own compilation series. Their idea was simple: have a party in an exciting foreign city, get an "A list" DJ to play and record  the set. It was such a popular idea that they decided to create their own record label to release the mixes - Boxed.

During its heyday in the late 90s the Global Underground mix series and clubbing brand became an international success. Mixes from Sasha, Oakenfold, de Vit, Tenaglia and many more are still in many peoples' playlists.

Although famous for their main "cities" releases they also produced several other series such as NuBreed (featuring up and coming DJs), the Aferhours chillout mixes and the artist specific Prototype (Seb Fontaine) and Lights Out (Steve Lawler).

In 2001 they dropped the Boxed branding from releases in favour of just the iconic "Global Underground". Due to ongoing financial problems, the original Boxed label closed in 2003 and Global Underground Ltd was born. Skip forward to now (2016) and the brand is still going strong with new releases in the main Global Underground series as well as NuBreed and Afterhours.
