I refuse to put it on facebook for my best mate....lol....this gets more hits

This is my daily blog about my journey with Insanity - The Asylum (vol. 1 sports performance)

Before I start, please let me allow some background about this. I was in shape for a great deal of years, I was 234 pounds at my heaviest at one point in my life. I lost about 70 pounds over the period of about 15 months. I ended up running for a long time but the great deal of knee pain suffered and the lack of watching what I consumed had pushed me to over 200 pounds. Since then I finally got the knee problems sorted out with exercises. So in my job, I do a great deal of manual labour in my job but I was not in great shape and since I am nearly 32. I am not getting younger.
Since my friends (who are my bosses) decided to do this. I was like OK, this could not be that bad. I figured if this got me into shape, helped me lose some pounds and get rid of my love handles (which my wife hates)...I figured why the hell not.

So I figured this would not be easy but it would be worth it in the long run. Anyway I could be pushed by those two and push them. So I bought the Insanity - The Asylum (Vol. 1) from Beach Body and figured I had 3 weeks before I was going to get my ass kicked.  I was wrong because Beach Body ships to Canadian Customers via a company in Oakville.

So I get the box and want to open it like a kid at Christmas. We as a collective group decided we would start Monday, March 11 for the Assessment. I will confess that I started to watch a bunch of the dvds (well parts) just to see how much of a beating I was going to take about 3 days earlier. I was not prepared about what I saw because Shawn T is a beast and just pushes and pushes you. I could not back out but as they say, no pain, No gain. I figured I could get back to 164 pounds, which was the lowest I could get myself to. I then realized that I would not get back to it, if I put on some muscle.  Now I did no weight training when I got to that point because I enjoyed running but I could not push my body lower. I could NOT back out, there were parts of me that wanted to not even do it but I figured I committed to this, so I better do this.
So first of all, I tried the assessment first, just to see how out of shape I had become and everything proved it. Also my ankle hurt from a previous injury, so that did not make things easier.

Monday, March 11st - Assessment Day

I was not looking forward to it but I decided I would go at my own pace anyway and be careful of my sore ankle, so I did not tear the ligament and have to sit on the sidelines. I weighed myself at the beginning and it said 205 pounds. I was almost floored at the weight. I have not had a working scale before I was married or since I have been married. I was out of shape, I still have no idea how tall I am but I believe its 5"7. I have never measured it over my lifetime but as far as I am concerned, my height will not change. Anyway, I started the video and over the next 20 minutes, I got buried with some harsh tests. I did not try to push it because I did want to injure my ankle either. It was a good indication of how bloated and out of shape I have become.

Tuesday, March 12st - Speed & Agility

This was a pure 45 minute workout. It used a lot of drills, some for more speed. Some for more than agility. The drills are pure nastiness, I found myself have to stop after 30 seconds for a harsh 1 minute drill because of the fatigue, the brutalness of the drill and my lack of cardio and being in shape. I sweated and sweated but that was good. I found after I hurt with muscles that I have not used in years. I realized then after this workout, this is no easy sweating to the oldies. This is pure harsh brutal workout.

Wednesday, March 13th - Strength

I bought some 10 pounds weights to do this one. I thought this would be easy but it involved lots of drills with weights. It was tough and I wanted to quit about half way through. I am not quitter and I need to continue to this program. The drills are so breaking at times, you just sit for the final 30 seconds, sweating terribly. I do all the drills without a shirt, so I do not drench the shirt. I noticed near the end of this episode that I started to be able to be not so winded. Well you are winded when you do these drills, the only person that is not winded is the guy who created it and the leader of the programs. I am gaining some endurance and I am gaining cardio.

Thursday, March 14th - Back To Core

This was the toughest of all the programs or dvds, so far. This involved holding the arms and legs in certain positions and holding them. It was very difficult and afterwards my legs hurt in places. I decided to weight myself and I was at 201.2. So after a few days, I dropped a few pounds but I feel better and happier. I am trying to watch what I eat and I have felt better eating more fruits and vegetables. I have not noticed much difference in my body yet but I feel better and have lots of energy.

Friday, March 15th - Vertical Pylo

This was the hardest on my sore ankle. As the title suggests, we are going vertical. This involves lots of jumps. I had to do it carefully because I did not want to land awkwardly on my ankle. It was very difficult and the exercises were designed to get you moving and I found I was feeling better. I noticed for the first time in the dvds that Shawn T got gassed by his own program.

Saturday, March 16th - Rest Day

It was supposed to be a rest day today and it was suggested by Dale on Friday that I take the rest day but I have become hardcore and figured I would workout by doing the only program/dvd left - which was gameday. It is the longest of all the dvds and contains a second section, which I will get to shortly. It was called Game Day and I needed a good sweat anyway because I am starting to be able to do more of the exercises and last longer. He encorporated sports of Speed Skating, Long Jump, Sprinting, Baseball, Basketball, Football, Swimming and running. I realized off the bat, this was serious because you end up running on the spot and pretending to climb hills but all for over 6 minutes. This was brutal and there was still 53 minutes left. I was starting to enjoy the drills and looking forward to the next one. I am feeling better, I am able to last longer doing the drills, which are very intense. You finish the 1st part of the dvd, there is still a 13 minute high intensity workout called OVERTIME. It was a sweaty and brutal way to finish a true workout but it was worth it and great to not take a day off to rest. I am now down to 199.6 pounds. Its great, nearly a week gone and about 5 pounds chopped off. I plan to do this for a few months, not the 30 day because I enjoy this and figure 3-4 months and then we see the results and maybe I will get another plan. It is take it one day at a time.

Sunday, March 17th – Speed and Agility

This is the second week that I am doing this. I find I have more energy and I am lasting longer doing these exercises. They are still ball breaking but I find I am also having more fun doing these difficult exercises. I am sweating and expanding more and more energy, so I am burning more calories. I am doing the drills in a much quicker fashion. Last week was a total disaster in terms of fading out. I was completely looking forward to the beating my body was going to take today. I believe I have become either stupid or just a plain sadist, who is looking forward to just pain. My body seems a little different but I still think I look similar to last week but five pounds lighter, with a hunger to do more exercise and to sweat off more pounds. I am looking forward to tomorrow’s very tough Strength dvd…..but we just keep going.

Monday, March 18th - Strength
I felt like crap, did the workout. I am starting to see certain lines (faint as hell!) on  my abs. Unfortunately after the workout, I started to feel the effects of the flu. Tomorrow will be an uplanned rest day but I will get back on track because day 10 is relief aka stretching.

Tuesday, March 19th - Unforseen Rest Day

Have the flu, day off work. Just sleeping and trying to drink liquids. It was unforseen but crap happens.

Wednesday, March 20th - Back To Core

I did not put in a total effort. I did this at night. I wanted to leave it but I wanted to say on track. I did not push myself because I am still a little weak from my bout with the flu. Such is life. I have noticed since I started to eat more veggies and fruit and watching what I put in my mouth that my recovery from the flu was quicker than expected. My wife LOVES this regime, lets just say that she is enjoying the improvement in stamina...................

Thursday, March 21st - Vertical Pylo  and Relief

I do confess that I do love this thing but I hate vertical pylo. My ankle has been sore for months off and on. While I do this regime, I have a brace on my left ankle. So jumping makes it very sore and painful. So I pushed it on some drills and was more careful on others because I am not injuring myself and ending up out of this for weeks. I would end up crying about this. I just weighed myself, now please understand, I did suffer the flu for 24-30 hours, so it cannot be that I just lost it all working out and eating better. But in 10 days, I am down 11 pounds almost. 194.6 as of today. Its working.... and plus my lovely wife loves this new me with more energy and more cardio....I will let you draw your own conclusions! Tomorrow is Game Day but I'm such a sucker for punishment, I am doing overtime as well! I have decided to reward myself with a cup of hot apple cider tonite. I have been drinking really just water with lemon to sweeten it. I was proud of myself, friends were going to buy donuts twice and I refused!.

tis why you are a chunky boy.

I have cut out alcohol now. Too many wasted calories plus I feel better eating healthy and not drinking. I feel very sluggish when I do.

I dare you leon to actually try that workout but do Insanity the original first. Stop drinking alcohol and then use the booklet that comes with it, for better feeling and weight loss. Its a tough regime but its fun and allows you to lose weight.

I dropped 5 pounds in 6 days...if I can do it. Anyone can. My friends are on shakes, which are meal replacements....which are great...

Not drinking alcohol makes a HUGE difference. (Assuming you used to drink a fair bit in the first place.)

I only have a drink 3 days a week now and I try to make sure it's just a glass (or two) of wine. Or Guinness   .

As long as you get some regular exercise - 30 to 40 minutes a day if its all you can fit in - then there is only one other thing you need to do to get thinner. Eat right!

I have cut out all junk and processed foods (so anything advertised on TV) and I either maintain my weight every week or it drops!

Now I've been doing this for a few months its easy. It's more of a lifestyle change than a diet. The best way imho.

Defintely alcohol is a massive one, never had to lose weight so not an issue... always  been thin, although had big dinner, beers and big dessert last night at my mates... after MOTD finished... couldn't find a damn taxi and all I got was "I'm booked" in the queue, so GPS on... Dubfire @ Sonar 2012 (2hours) and smashed out a drizzly 7 mile back walk home!!!

Queue "fucking" ankles sore this morning!!!

Still raining in England then?

I really miss the English weather. But not as much as I miss Fish & Chips and mushy peas. Sniff.

Remember lads, no pain = no gain. Diets are great for losing weight and eating healthy BUT if you do not add cardio or at least walking. You are not improving yourself as best as you can.

Case and point, my brother went on a gluten free diet. Now he has dropped 25 pounds but he has not added cardio or even walking. So his diet is great but he is not adding that cardio, which will give hi a better quality of life.
